A seminar titled “Road Safety Problems in Dhaka City: The Roles and Initiatives of DTCA” was held at BUET on 5 November 2020.

Accident Research Institute (ARI) of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) is a pioneer of the transportation safety research in Bangladesh. The primary objective of this institute is to carry out scientific research and investigation of accidents in roads, railways and waterways. The institute also shares the acquired knowledge with the practicing professionals and creates awareness at different community level across the country to ensure the Safer Transportation System.


It is to be noted that the ARI is looking forward to be recognized as the Regional Centre of Excellence in transport safety research and innovation to serve the country as well as the entire region. Therefore, ARI is taking numerous initiatives to address the need of safe transport and road infrastructure goals of Bangladesh towards effective and sustainable reduction of road traffic related deaths and trauma in the region. As a part of these initiatives, ARI and Dhaka Transport Co-ordination Authority (DTCA) jointly organized a national seminar titled “Road Safety Problems in Dhaka City: The Roles and Initiatives of DTCA”. The seminar was held at the BUET Council Building on 05 November, 2020 at 11AM.


The aim of this seminar was to exchange knowledge share on road accidents condition in Dhaka City and the importance of undertaking the implementable accident mitigation measures with the associated government and non-government stakeholders who are also involved with the aim of ensuring the safer roads. The DTCA officials also shared their roles and initiatives in mitigating road crashes to improve overall road safety situation in Dhaka city. Various important facts of road accidents and consequent losses were also emphasized in the seminar. The seminar also included a technical session associated with the project titled “Road Safety Management and Capacity Building Project”. This project has been initiated by the DTCA with the consultation of the ARI, BUET. It is expected that this project will help to reduce road crashes in Dhaka City and can contribute in achieving the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) of this developing nation.


Honorable Minister of the Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges, Mr. Obaidul Quader MP, was present as the Chief Guest in the seminar. Professor Dr. Satya Prasad Majumder, Honorable Vice Chancellor of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) was present as the Special Guest in the seminar. Mr. Md. Nazrul Islam, Secretary, Road Transport and Highways Division was also present as the Special Guest. The Guest of Honor of the seminar was Professor Dr. Abdul Jabbar Khan, Honorable Pro-Vice Chancellor of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET). Dr. Md. Hadiuzzaman, Director of Accident Research Institute (ARI) was present as the Key Note Speaker. Mr. Khandakar Rakibur Rahman, Executive Director, Dhaka Transport Coordination Authority (DTCA) chaired the occasion. Honorable Chief Guest Mr. Obaidul Quader MP and Special Guest Mr. Md. Nazrul Islam were connected in the seminar through online. The seminar was coordinated by Dr. Armana Sabiha Huq, Assistant Professor, ARI, BUET.


Towards the end of the seminar, the floor for discussion was opened among the participants where they put forward a number of useful recommendations for mitigating road accidents and thereby improving road safety situation in the Capital City of Bangladesh.
